On Tuesday, Arizona State Republican Senator Kelli Ward representing the fifth legislative district spoke to the Pima County Republican Club about herself and her upcoming election. Ward currently is challenging U.S. Senator John McCain for his Senate seat in the 2016 election.
Ward echoed what many in the room have believed for some time – 30 years in the beltway has changed Sen. John McCain. “Inside the Beltway” is a phrase that refers to matters and special interests that are important primarily to officials of the U.S. federal government, contractors, lobbyists and corporate media that are geography located within the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) as opposed to the interests and priorities of the general U.S. population. Sen. Ward goes on to say that we deserve more than beltway speak and D.C. lies and promises. We deserve a different kind of Senator.” She spells out Sen. McCain’s voting record referring to it as one not consistent with core Conservative ideology and values.
“The Government that is closest to the people is always the best path.” – Senator Kelli Ward

Concerning our country’s heath care crisis, Ward would like to work on these issues with people from our national stage such as Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Rand Paul to come up with reasonable solutions. She also likes what presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson has said about allowing people to make choices on what people need in health services in an effort to minimize cost to the consumer. As a currently practicing emergency doctor, Ward believes in the offering a type of health insurance that you would not plan to use unless in the event of an emergency or accident. She also says, “Medicare is decreasing [our] access to care, decreasing quality of care, increasing the cost of care. Those are all things we don’t want to do.” She puts her support behind Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a political advocacy group in Tucson, Arizona that opposes abortion, Medicare/Medicaid, universal health care, and government involvement in health care in general. She feels this is the only group that truly represents physicians and patients.
What she refers to as “The House of Medicine” is a group of organizations that have in her words “sold us out” within our healthcare system. This group is made up of organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA), known for being actively involved with medical policy issues from Medicare and HMOs to public health, and climate change. She includes the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and AARP as groups that she believes “use their own clout to push a through a socialized medicine.” She continues to say that “single pay around the world does not work.”
Kelli Ward spoke out against illegal immigration saying that she has seen how it has affected our education, heath, public safety (DPS) and correctional systems as she is demanding that these issues have got to stop. She points out that Sen. McCain wanted to build a border fence to secure our boarder but instead voted for amnesty calling the bill he voted for as taking “hundreds of billions of dollars for illegal immigrants out of the tax payer’s pocket.” Sen. Ward continues to says, “Now, that is wrong and we got to secure the border.”
Ward is proud to be a military wife and proud of her husband Mike, who has been in the military for over thirty years. She explained that he enlisted into the Air Force straight out of High School before even having a discussion with his parents about going into the service. He is currently the State Air Surgeon in our Air National Guard. Due to her personal life experiences, she is determined to keep the promises our country has made to our veterans that she says, “….are completely being disregarded right now.” Sen. Ward sums it up to say, “We cannot allow that to stand. We have to fix the VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) and we have to honor what we’ve promised our veterans who signed on the line to protect our freedoms in our country.” as this will be a big part of her campaign.
Kelli Ward says she wishes to control our Government spending. She says the reasons for running are to preserve freedom and liberty for her children and grandchildren as well as for all of our futures. She is running against Sen. McCain in an effort to elect a Republican Senator in Arizona that represents Republican values, values that she says, “….we are not getting right now.” She points out her position clearly in saying, “We are getting served by a Senator that has to fight being censured by his very own party.” She is asking for somebody who is willing to work to make D.C. work for us verses “an over baring Federal Government in our everyday lives, day in and day out.” She would like to remake Washington D.C with new ideas and a fresh perceptive to actually get things done.
The floor was opened up for over thirty minutes to questions that ranged from birth right citizenship, border security, our economy, Federal Government spending, limited Government philosophy, States rights, the Convention of States project, insurance companies, Planned Parenthood, abortion, as well as the “Obamacare” healthcare system. When asked about our 2nd Amendment Rights, she says that she is 100% for protecting these rights. She goes on to say that she has been a sponsored of the Arizona ‘2nd Amendment Protection Act’ every year that she has been in office. She thinks it is sad that a State has to have such an act in the first place to control Federal Government overreach. She also explains and spells out what our 2nd Amendment rights mean to her. Kelli Ward provided an engaging and informative question and answer session that everyone seemed to enjoy.
Ward closed the forum by asking to “please” keep in touch with her through social media as there are a lot of conversations from people who both support and hate her who often express the direction our country should go. She is also asking for financial support to fund her campaign in order to compete with McCain’s abundant campaign finances. Ward earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Duke University, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (a professional doctoral degree for physicians and surgeons), and a master’s degree in public health from A.T. Still University. In January 2014, she introduced the “Arizona Fourth Amendment Protection Act” that would have implemented restrictions on the powers of the NSA within the State of Arizona. Even with multiple co-sponsors, the bill did not pass the Arizona State Legislature.
