On Saturday August 20 at approximately 10:30 PM, YCSO deputies were dispatched to an apartment building located at 70 Bell Rock Blvd, Village of Oak Creek, regarding a family fight. The caller reported that her brother, 22-year-old Erasmo Nevarez, was attacking her husband, 27, with a screwdriver. As the first deputy arrived, he learned that family members, including the victim, were trying to hold Nevarez down inside a bathroom in the apartment. Nevarez is 6 feet tall and weighs 260 pounds. Deputies entered the bathroom, contained the suspect and determined the victim had sustained significant stabbing related injuries including a laceration to his rib cage along with visible lacerations on his face. Blood was evident throughout the bathroom. Suspect Nevarez was compliant with deputies but refused to talk about the incident.
Deputies placed him under arrest. Deputies were told that when the victim walked through the apartment door after arriving home from work, Nevarez stood up from the couch where he was sitting, removed a screwdriver from his pocket and attacked the victim with the weapon. 3 children were also present in the apartment when the attack occurred.
EMS personnel treated the victim and his wife on scene. The victim’s wife received cuts and scratches trying to hold Nevarez down until deputies arrived. The victim was transported to Verde Valley Medical Center for treatment. A screwdriver was recovered. The family was unclear as to the exact motivations for the attack, but did note Nevarez was suffering from several medical issues recently and easy to anger. There was no evidence the attack was provoked.
Nevarez, who is from Camp Verde, was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Disorderly Conduct per Domestic Violence and Assault per Domestic Violence. He remains in-custody on a $10,000 bond.
