On June 15, 2016 at 6:18 a.m., Tucson Police officers responded to the intersection of West Speedway Boulevard and North Main Avenue for a report of a collision involving a motorcycle driven by 23-year-old Rodrigo A. Ortega Saldate.
Tucson Fire was on scene and transported the motorcyclist to Banner University Medical Center. Shortly after arrival at the hospital, the victim passed away from his injuries.
Tucson Police Traffic Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that the motorcyclist was westbound on West Speedway, driving a 2015 Can-Am Spyder. As the motorcycle entered the intersection of North Main Avenue on a green light, it was struck by a 2013 Ford Transit van that was making a left turn from eastbound Speedway. The rider, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was thrown from the motorcycle.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision and there were no signs of impairment from the driver of the van. No citations have been issued at this time. Detectives are continuing the investigation.
