For years, the Goldfield Road and Superstition intersection in Apache Junction has had stop signs for the north and south bound traffic on Goldfield Road. Traffic travelling east and west on Superstition flows freely, until recently.
On Friday afternoon, an area resident skidded to a stop as soon as he realized there was a new stop sign. There is minimal notice provided to drivers of the big change, and it causing concerns and could cause a serious accident.
After one resident witnessed another driver run the stop sign at full speed going eastbound, he called 911. An Apache Junction dispatcher said they knew about the situation, but that resource issues would prevent anything from being done till “after the holiday.”
When the local resident returned to take pictures for this article around 3 pm he noticed that Apache Junction Police Department had put up a speed monitoring sign. While well intended the sign partially obscures the “Stop sign ahead” sign for eastbound traffic.
An Apache Junction police officer expressed his frustration with the situation also expressing concern of potential accidents. While he and the resident talked about the situation, they watched as cars traveling both east and west on Superstition flew through the intersection at full speed.
