Operation Southern Shield Takes Over 100 Vehicles Off Road

Operation Southern Shield, conducted March 1 through 3, has resulted in 1,068 commercial vehicle inspections. Over 100 commercial vehicles and commercial vehicle drivers placed out of service.

Operation Southern Shield covered from Tucson to the New Mexico border, south to the Mexico border and involved roving patrols, a stationary inspection point on Interstate 19 and educational opportunities.

Operation Southern Shield resulted in 1,068 commercial vehicle inspections, 67 of which were commercial vehicles transporting hazardous materials and 38 of which were motor coaches. A total of 145 commercial vehicles were placed out of service for various mechanical violations. 134 commercial vehicle drivers were placed out of service.

During the two days of the Driver Awareness Regulation Training (DART) 117 drivers took the opportunity to receive the latest training about federal trucking regulations. At the Share the Road presentation, located at the Super Walmart in Marana, many people took the opportunity to learn about the road from a commercial vehicle driver’s point of view. In addition, Share the Road made presentations at both Sahuaro High School and Marana High School in which over 200 students learned about safety when driving near commercial vehicles.

Speaking about the success of Operation Southern Shield Captain Jeff Lane, Southern Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Commander said, “Working in concert with numerous state and local partners, Operation Southern Shield 2016 was highly effective in the enforcement of commercial motor vehicle rules and regulations, as well as having provided information to more than 115 professional drivers. The real payoff of these efforts is the safe operation and reduction of collisions involving commercial motor vehicles.”
